UK Prime Minister: UK to recognize Palestine in September

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that if the Israeli government does not take concrete steps to end the dire situation in Gaza, the UK will recognize the state of Palestine before the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in September.

Starmer made the remarks following a cabinet meeting held regarding Gaza.

Prime Minister Starmer stated that aid drops to Gaza have begun, but he wants at least 500 trucks of aid to enter per day.

Emphasizing that the only way to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is a long-term solution, Starmer also underscored his support for ceasefire efforts.

In his speech, Starmer noted that the time has come to recognize Palestine as the hope for a two-state solution is at risk, and that this would have the greatest impact, stating the following:

"I can confirm that if the Israeli government does not take concrete steps to accept a ceasefire to end the dire situation in Gaza, revive the prospect of a two-state solution, and commit to long-term sustainable peace, the UK will recognize the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September."
