UK to ban Hizb ut-Tahrir
The UK government has initiated the process to classify and ban the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization as a terrorist group.
UK Home Secretary James Cleverly announced that preparations are underway to classify the radical Islamist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir as a "terrorist" entity and ban it.
In his statement, Cleverly said that Parliament would vote on the draft decree this week and that the ban could come into effect as early as January 19.
Describing Hizb ut-Tahrir as an "antisemitic organization that promotes and encourages terrorism," Cleverly added that the group had celebrated the terrorist attacks carried out by the radical Islamist Hamas against Israel on October 7 and described Hamas fighters as "heroes."
According to a report by DW, the draft to be voted on in Parliament stipulates that those who support Hizb ut-Tahrir could face up to 14 years in prison and the seizure of their assets.
In a statement regarding the matter, the Home Office said, "Hizb ut-Tahrir has previously praised attacks on Israel and on Jews more generally." The statement continued, "The UK is absolutely committed to tackling antisemitism and will not tolerate the promotion of terrorism in any form."
Founded in 1953, Hizb ut-Tahrir aims to unite all Muslims in a theocracy where Sharia law is in effect.
According to the UK Home Office, the organization operates in at least 32 countries, including the UK, the US, Canada, and Australia.
Due to its anti-Jewish incitement and threats of violence, Hizb ut-Tahrir has been on the list of banned organizations in many countries, including Germany, since 2003.
