UK to deploy warship around Cyprus

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made a statement regarding regional security following an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attack by Iran on the British military base Akrotiri, located near Limassol in the Republic of Cyprus.

In a post on his social media account, Starmer stated that he had spoken with Republic of Cyprus leader Nikos Christodoulides and noted that the British "Type 45" air defense destroyer "HMS Dragon" would be deployed to the region.

Emphasizing that the safety of British military personnel on the island of Cyprus is a priority, Starmer said, "We are continuing our defense operations. I informed the Greek Cypriot leader that we will be deploying helicopters with anti-UAV capabilities and the HMS Dragon warship to the region. We will always act in the interests of the UK and our allies."

The UAV attack at Akrotiri

Government Spokesman for the Republic of Cyprus Konstantinos Letymbiotis had announced that the UAV that fell in the base area on the night between Sunday and Monday caused limited damage and that authorities had immediately activated security protocols. Letymbiotis stated that following the incident, Greek Cypriot authorities have been in constant coordination with the British government and the British bases administration.

British base officials at Akrotiri had also called on local residents to "remain in a safe place until further notice." The statement noted that the security level had been raised to the highest level to protect base personnel.
