Ukraine takes a step toward cooperation with Syria on air defense

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy opened the doors to a new era between the two countries with a meeting held in Damascus with Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Shara. Following Zelenskyy's visit to key countries in the Middle East, this meeting addressed the potential for cooperation in many areas, primarily defense.

Among the prominent topics in the discussion is addressing Syria's need for modern air defense systems and Ukraine's experience in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology through a mutual exchange of expertise and equipment. Zelenskyy emphasized his support for Syria, stating, "We provide full support to the stability and development processes in the post-Assad era. The strength of both countries will increase through joint efforts."

During the talks held at the official Syrian presidential palace, security concerns arising from Ukraine's ongoing war with Russia and developments in that process were also discussed in detail. The parties evaluated opportunities for diplomatic and military cooperation, focusing on the effects of Russia's attacks on Ukraine on regional security.

RUSSIAN MILITARY PRESENCE DETERMINES THE BALANCE

Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Shara emphasized the importance of economic and technical cooperation for the development of relations. Al-Shara stated that the Damascus administration is taking steps to increase its international partners and restore regional balance. In particular, the Russian bases still active on Syrian territory emerged as a strategic element in these talks.

During al-Shara's presidency, Syria had begun taking diplomatic steps to regain its place in the international arena after the long-running war. However, the Syrian administration is managing its existing relations with Moscow with a delicate balance. In the talks held in January, no official request was made regarding the withdrawal of Russian military presence from Syria.

The new memorandums to be signed between Ukraine and Syria are expected to provide mutual benefits to both countries in terms of defense, as well as economy and technology sharing. The two administrations plan to deepen their cooperation further in the coming period.
