UN: Food stocks in Gaza exhausted, access to water becoming impossible

Drawing attention to the brutality in Gaza, UNOCHA spokesperson Cherevko stated that decision-makers have been silently watching images of bloodied children, severed limbs, and grieving parents for months.

Olga Cherevko said, "After nearly 18 months of bloody war, Gaza has been turned into ruins. The streets are filled with rubble, and the sounds of children playing are cut short by the roar of explosions."

Stating that Israel closed the borders two months ago to block the entry of humanitarian aid and other supplies into Gaza, which triggered a countdown to the worst-case scenario, Cherevko said, "Food stocks are mostly exhausted, access to water is becoming impossible, and hospitals are reporting that blood units have run out. Mass casualties continue to arrive. In less than 1.5 months, more than 420 thousand people in Gaza have been forced to flee once again. Many of them arrived at overcrowded shelters with only the clothes on their backs, having been shot at along the way. Tents and other facilities where people seek safety are being bombed," she stated.

Emphasizing that the horror in Gaza continues while the world watches, Cherevko said that this grim picture could be reversed if the necessary supplies were available, and that they are ready to distribute aid if the crossings are reopened.

Stating that the international community has two options, Cherevko noted that these are to continue watching the horrific images of Gaza being suffocated and starved, or to take courageous and moral steps to make decisions that will break this brutal blockade.

United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs spokesperson Olga Cherevko expressed concern that people are becoming desensitized to the constant killings in Gaza, saying, "The number of people killed or injured has become another surreal reality that is being measured. I am worried that in 5, 10, or 20 years, we will look at our children and grandchildren and not be able to explain to them why we could not stop this horror. How much more blood must be shed for this to end?" she said.
