UN peacekeeping mission mandate in Cyprus extended

The decision was adopted unanimously during a vote held at the UNSC.

With this, the mandate of the UNFICYP, which has been on the island since 1964, has been extended for another year.

The resolution welcomed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' appointment of former Colombian Foreign Minister Cuellar as his Personal Envoy on Cyprus, while calling on the parties to seize this opportunity and act in cooperation.

The resolution, which called on the parties to reduce tensions in the buffer zone, emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the buffer zone.

The UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus was established in 1964 by a Security Council resolution with a force consisting of 796 military and 65 police personnel.

The island of Cyprus has been divided into two parts since 1974, with Turks in the north and Greeks in the south, and in 2004, Greek Cypriots rejected a plan presented by the UN to reunify the two parts of the island.
