UN Secretary-General Guterres speaks out on 'double standards'
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a statement made ahead of the European Union (EU) Leaders' Summit, said, "We must adhere to principles in Gaza just as we do in Ukraine, without applying double standards."
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made statements ahead of the EU Leaders' Summit in Brussels, the capital of Belgium.
Calling on the EU to avoid "double standards" regarding Gaza, Guterres stated that compliance with the principles of international humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip is mandatory, adding, "We must adhere to principles in Gaza just as we do in Ukraine, without applying double standards."
Stating that "we live in a chaotic world," Guterres said, "We have a situation of impunity where any country or any armed group thinks they can do whatever they want because there is no accountability."
Reiterating his call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Guterres said, "We condemn the fact that we are witnessing an unprecedented number of civilian casualties in Gaza during my tenure as secretary-general."
