UN Secretary-General Guterres: 'The eyes of history are upon us, we cannot look away'

Antonio Guterres made a statement to journalists at the UN headquarters in New York.

Expressing that the month of Ramadan, during which Muslims around the world celebrate and spread the values of peace, reconciliation, and solidarity, has begun, Guterres said, "Despite the start of Ramadan, the killing, bombing, and slaughter in Gaza continue."

'WEAPONS MUST BE SILENCED'

Reminding that the conflict in Gaza has entered its 6th month, Guterres stated, "Today, I am making a strong appeal to silence the guns in the spirit of Ramadan and to remove all obstacles to ensure the delivery of life-saving aid at the necessary level and speed."

'THE EYES OF HISTORY ARE UPON US'

Demanding the release of all hostages, Guterres said, "The eyes of the world are upon us. The eyes of history are upon us. We cannot look away. We must act to prevent preventable deaths."

Pointing out that he has witnessed an unprecedented level of civilian loss of life and destruction during his tenure, Guterres said that aid entering Gaza is very scarce, merely "trickling in."

Noting that international humanitarian law is being shattered, Guterres warned that an Israeli attack on Rafah would push the people of Gaza into an even deeper circle of hell.
