UN Security Council decides to hold emergency meeting

Following the death of Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh in an assassination in Iran, the United Nations (UN) Security Council has decided to hold an emergency meeting.

Russia, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council, stated that the meeting was requested by Iran and supported by Russia, China, and Algeria, adding that the meeting will take place today at 23:00 (Turkey time).

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stated that Guterres considers the attacks in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, and Tehran, the capital of Iran, to be a dangerous escalation at a time when all efforts should be directed toward a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of Israeli hostages.
