UN Security Council expected to vote on Gaza resolution

According to a report by Reuters citing diplomatic sources, the ten non-permanent members of the 15-member United Nations (UN) Security Council have requested a vote on a draft resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza to be respected by all parties.

The draft text of the resolution also includes demands for the release of hostages in Gaza, the immediate removal of all barriers to the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and the unhindered and large-scale distribution of aid throughout Gaza with the involvement of the UN.

Similar draft resolutions have previously been vetoed by the US. The US vetoed a Security Council draft resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza last November.

For a resolution to be adopted in the Security Council, it must receive the support of nine of the fifteen members and must not be vetoed by any of the five permanent members: the US, Russia, China, the UK, and France.

The vote expected to be held by the UN Security Council today is seen as an important step toward alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and ending the conflict.
