UN statement on Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi
The United Nations has announced that a comprehensive investigation must be launched into the death of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, who was shot in the head and killed by Israeli soldiers, and that those responsible must be held accountable.
The United Nations (UN) has called for an investigation into the death of Turkish-American citizen Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, who lost her life as a result of fire opened by Israeli soldiers in the city of Nablus in the West Bank. UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric responded to questions from an AA reporter, emphasizing that the incident must be investigated comprehensively.
UN DEMANDS INVESTIGATION
Stating that he did not yet have detailed information regarding the circumstances of the incident, Dujarric said, "We want a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable. Civilians must be protected in all circumstances."
'PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS HAVE NOT YIELDED RESULTS'
When asked by the AA reporter whether the UN had received results from previous investigations it had requested into similar incidents, Dujarric replied, "Nothing has been done in the context of UN personnel." Dujarric noted that investigations are generally conducted after conflicts end and that, with the exception of some punitive situations regarding Palestinian prisoners, no progress has been made.
The UN spokesperson also stated that they are aware that Israel does not open investigations into many civilian deaths. Regarding the question of whether the UN has issued an official condemnation of Eygi's death, Dujarric stated that more information needs to be gathered.
26-year-old Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi lost her life after being shot during an operation conducted by Israeli soldiers in occupied Nablus.
