UN statement on Israel's attacks in Lebanon
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, stated that the safety and security of UN peacekeeping troops in Lebanon are "increasingly at risk," noting that operational activities have come to a near standstill since September 23.
Israel's attacks on Lebanon have also negatively impacted UN operations in the region. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, stated during a UN Security Council meeting that the safety and security of UN peacekeeping troops in Lebanon are "increasingly at risk."
Pointing out that Israel has entered many areas with "Merkava tanks" and construction equipment, Lacroix also reminded that Hezbollah continues to fire across the Blue Line.
"PEACEKEEPERS TRAPPED IN BASES"
Noting that operational activities have come to a near standstill since September 23, Lacroix stated, "Peacekeepers have been trapped in their bases for a long time."
Emphasizing that the mission known as UNIFIL is ready to support all efforts toward a diplomatic solution, Lacroix said, "UNIFIL is mandated to support the implementation of Resolution 1701. However, we must insist that it is up to the parties to implement the provisions of this resolution."
Criticizing the Israeli military's presence near UN facilities, Lacroix underscored that the Israeli army is obligated to protect the status of UNIFIL as well as its personnel and facilities. Thanking the member states contributing to UNIFIL, Lacroix added that the strong support of the UN Security Council is more important than ever.
