UN warns of US-Iran crisis! 'A dangerous turning point'

Guterres spoke at the UN Security Council (UNSC), which convened following the US airstrikes on Iran.

"The US bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities marks a dangerous turning point in an already fragile region," Guterres said, warning that the people of the region "cannot endure" another cycle of destruction.

Guterres stated, "We must act immediately and decisively to halt the hostilities and return to serious, sustainable negotiations regarding the Iranian nuclear program."

The UN Secretary-General, who noted that he has "repeatedly condemned" initiatives that have caused rising tensions in the Middle East since the beginning of the crisis between Israel and Iran, expressed concern that retaliations between the parties are still ongoing.

Pointing to diplomacy to end the dangerous trajectory in the region, Guterres emphasized the need to protect civilians and ensure safe maritime traffic.

"The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons is a cornerstone of international peace and security," Guterres said, noting that Iran must "fully respect" it.

US President Donald Trump had announced that they carried out airstrikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran: Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.
