UNICEF statement on Gaza: Critical 'child' warning: 'The most dangerous place in the world'

In a statement on the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) website, Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Adele Khodr provided information regarding child deaths, injuries, and the humanitarian situation following Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip.

TURNED INTO PILES OF RUBBLE

Khodr stated, "With nearly one million children forcibly displaced from their homes, the Gaza Strip has become the most dangerous place in the world for children."

Noting that reports indicate dozens of children are killed and injured every day, Khodr reported that the places where children used to play have turned into piles of rubble.

"THEIR LIVES ARE UNDER GREATER THREAT"

Khodr emphasized that UNICEF and other humanitarian organizations have been sounding the alarm for weeks, noting that teams on the ground are encountering children who have lost limbs, suffered third-degree burns, or are experiencing trauma due to the ongoing violence around them.

The UN official stated, "Nearly one million children have been forcibly displaced. They are now being sent further south to small, overcrowded areas without water, food, or any protection. This exposes them to increased respiratory infections and waterborne diseases. Their lives are under greater threat due to dehydration, malnutrition, and disease."

HUMANITARIAN PAUSE

Khodr stated that the restrictions imposed on the delivery of life-saving aid to the Gaza Strip are another death sentence passed against children.

Warning that the public is being driven to despair under the intense pressure caused by the practices that followed the end of the "humanitarian pause," Khodr stated that an immediate, lasting humanitarian ceasefire is the only way to prevent the killing and maiming of children.

Khodr emphasized that a lasting humanitarian ceasefire is also the only way to protect civilians and ensure the delivery of urgently needed life-saving aid.

"THE WORLD IS WATCHING HELPLESSLY"

Calling for comprehensive humanitarian aid to be allowed into the region to prevent further hardship and suffering, Khodr emphasized that UNICEF and humanitarian aid organizations must have safe access to all children and their families wherever they are in the Gaza Strip, including the north.

Khodr added that the world is watching what is happening in Gaza helplessly, that they are not acting fast enough, and that this situation must be ended immediately.
