UNSC adopts resolution condemning Iran; Russia and China abstain

In a vote held at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), a draft resolution was adopted condemning the Tehran administration for striking Gulf countries that allowed their bases to be used by the US and Israel in response to the attacks on Iran that began on February 28.

While 13 members of the UNSC supported the resolution to condemn Iran, China and Russia abstained.

More than 130 UN member states also supported the draft, which was submitted by Bahrain on behalf of the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council—consisting of Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—as well as Jordan.

The UNSC had convened for an emergency briefing on February 28 to discuss the crisis, during which the US characterized Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs as a threat to international peace and security. The US stated that the purpose of its joint military operation with Israel was to destroy these capabilities and disrupt Iran's support for militant proxy groups.

Iran had condemned the attack as a violation of international law and the UN Charter, and underscored its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the Charter.
