Uranium detected in drinking water in Greece: State of emergency declared
A state of emergency has been declared in three settlements in the city of Serres in northern Greece after dangerous levels of uranium were detected in the drinking water.
According to a report by the Greek public broadcaster ERT, the state of emergency decision taken by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection for the settlements of Serres, Lefkonas, and Kristos aims to facilitate efforts to combat the uranium problem detected in the water.
The state of emergency, which was declared upon the request of Serres Mayor Varvara Mitlianga, will remain in effect until June 26.
This decision will provide the relevant municipality and institutions with access to financial resources that can be used in emergency situations, and will enable support for citizens by accelerating the process toward resolving the issue.
During inspections conducted in Serres last week, dangerous levels of uranium were detected in the drinking water, and the use of water for drinking and cooking was prohibited in five residential areas.
