US adds risk of civil unrest to Ukraine travel advisory
Washington has maintained its 'Do Not Travel' advisory for Ukraine while adding civil unrest to the list of risks, urging citizens to avoid crowds.
The US Department of State has updated its travel advisory for Ukraine, including potential civil unrest among the risk factors. The department reiterated its call for citizens not to travel to Ukraine.
In the advisory updated on August 28, the overall level remained unchanged, with the highest category, 'Level 4: Do Not Travel,' remaining in effect. However, the addition of the phrase 'civil unrest' to the risk factors drew attention.
US citizens currently in Ukraine were advised to closely monitor developments and be prepared to leave their locations on short notice if necessary. The advisory stated that air raid alerts should be taken seriously and that the nearest shelters should be identified in advance.
The department also asked citizens to avoid demonstrations and crowded environments. While the US Embassy in Kyiv continues its operations, it was reported that the movement of embassy personnel outside the capital is restricted.
Travel by US government employees outside of Kyiv is subject to special authorization. The Department of State also does not permit family members of personnel to be present in Ukraine.
The notification reminded that Ukrainian airspace remains closed to US civil aviation. It was also noted that martial law restrictions, including curfews and identity checks, are in effect in some regions.
Washington has updated its security advisories for various regions in recent months. Previously, a call was made to leave Iran, and Americans were also advised to be cautious regarding potential tensions in the Middle East and the level of terrorist threat in the United Kingdom.
