Following a quarantine alert in the Irkutsk region of the Russian Federation, the US Department of State has issued a new warning to citizens who have recently visited the area.
The Washington administration has requested that travelers monitor their health for 14 days after their trip, follow the guidance of local health authorities, and prepare an emergency departure plan that can be implemented without relying on assistance from the US government.
Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev stated in a post on Telegram that individuals identified as having been in contact with a suspected case are being kept under medical observation. Kobzev noted that these individuals have shown no symptoms and that tests for dangerous infectious disease pathogens have returned negative.
As reported by the AP, the mayor of the town of Shelekhov also stated that the hospital where a woman lost her life has been placed under quarantine.
The US Department of State's recommendations for travelers who have visited the region include the following points:
- - Follow the instructions of local health authorities.
- - Stay away from affected facilities.
- - Seek medical attention if you develop fever or respiratory symptoms.
- - Monitor your health for 14 days after travel.
- - Contact your travel insurance company regarding medical evacuation options in case you become ill abroad.
The Department also advised its citizens to check the US Embassy's country page for general health information and to make personal preparations in advance for leaving the region in an emergency.
