US Congress demands independent investigation into Eygi's killing

Democratic Representative Adam Smith announced in a post on the X platform that they have submitted a letter to the Washington administration requesting an independent investigation into the killing of Eygi. The letter bears the signatures of 103 members of Congress regarding Eygi's death.

The letter states that they are "deeply troubled" by the preliminary investigation conducted by Israel, which claims that Eygi was shot "unintentionally." It was emphasized that this statement contradicts the accounts of independent eyewitnesses. The members of Congress stated, "Given the evidence, we believe the US must independently investigate whether this was a homicide."

Furthermore, the letter calls on the White House, the Department of State, and the Department of Justice to conduct an independent, comprehensive, credible, and transparent investigation into Eygi's killing. Smith stated, "To walk away without asking further questions is to give Israeli forces a license to act with impunity."

Eygi was severely wounded and lost her life as a result of fire opened by Israeli soldiers during a peaceful demonstration in the occupied West Bank on September 6. Her funeral was held in the Didim district of Aydın on September 14.

Eygi, a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement, which supports Palestinians through peaceful and civil methods against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, had taken a stance similar to that of Rachel Corrie, a US citizen who was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer in 2003. Eygi's death has resonated widely both in the US and among the international public. Eygi's family and supporters are preparing to organize various protests to demand justice.
