US federal budget deficit exceeds expectations

The US Department of the Treasury has released its federal budget balance report for May. According to the report, the federal government budget recorded a deficit higher than expected in the eighth month of the 2026 fiscal year, which began on October 1, 2025, and will end on September 30.

While market expectations were for a budget deficit of 282.9 billion dollars in May, the actual budget deficit was 293 billion dollars.

However, this figure indicates a decrease of approximately 7 percent in the deficit compared to the same period last year. The federal government had recorded a budget deficit of 316 billion dollars in May of last year.

According to the ministry's data, government revenues in May decreased by 10 percent compared to the same period last year, falling to 336 billion dollars. In the same period, federal expenditures also showed a 9 percent decline, coming in at 628 billion dollars.

Total eight-month deficit is over 1.2 trillion dollars

As of May, the eighth month of the 2026 fiscal year in the country, the cumulative budget deficit decreased by 9 percent compared to the same period last year, falling to 1.246 trillion dollars. The deficit in question was recorded at 1.364 trillion dollars in the first eight months of the previous fiscal year.

In the remaining eight months of the fiscal year, total revenues increased by 5 percent compared to the same period last year to reach 3.656 trillion dollars, while the increase in expenditures remained at the 1 percent level, reaching 4.902 trillion dollars.
