US House of Representatives passes bill to make daylight saving time permanent
The House of Representatives passed the bill, which would end the twice-yearly clock change, by a vote of 308 to 117. All eyes are now on the Senate.
The US House of Representatives has passed a bill aimed at making daylight saving time permanent in the country and ending the twice-yearly clock changes.
The regulation, called the "Sunshine Protection Act," received bipartisan support in the vote held on July 14. The bill passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 308 to 117.

The regulation proposes to permanently move the US to the time system currently applied between March and November. For the law to take effect, the Senate process must also be completed; it is also possible for the bill to undergo changes in the Senate.
It was reported that Republican Scott DesJarlais, who presided over the vote, played a segment of The Beatles' song "Here Comes the Sun" from his phone during the final count.
TRUMP HAD PROMISED
US President Donald Trump had promised to abolish clock changes after his return to the White House for a second term. In a post on his social media account in May, Trump said he would "work very hard" to get legislation passed on this issue.

It is time for people to stop worrying about the 'Clock'; not to mention all the effort and money spent on this ridiculous twice-yearly ritual. This will also be a very nice WIN for the Republican Party. Pass it!
Florida Republican Representative Vern Buchanan, who introduced the bill in January 2025, argued that clock changes disrupt schedules "for no good reason."
The origin of daylight saving time in the US dates back to the First World War. The practice was initiated to take advantage of more daylight in the afternoon during the summer months and to save electricity. The practice, which came to the agenda again during the Second World War, was regulated by the 1966 law that standardized clock changes across the country.
However, some places, including Hawaii and Arizona, as well as US territories such as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, have chosen to opt out of the practice.
Opponents of permanent daylight saving time point out that winter mornings will be darker and that driving conditions could become riskier for those who set out early. Those who advocate for maintaining standard time state that morning light is more suitable for sleep patterns and health.
