US issues stern tax warning on Russian oil imports
The US has threatened additional customs duties of up to 100 percent on countries importing oil from Russia. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that these sanctions could also encompass national security issues.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that China's oil imports from Russia and Iran could become a significant topic in future discussions between the US and China. In his remarks to Bloomberg, he emphasized that while trade between the two countries is progressing positively, national security issues may become more prominent.
Speaking to CNBC, Bessent noted that China is one of the largest importers of oil from sanctioned nations Iran and Russia, and said that this situation must now be addressed.
Signaling new US sanctions against Russia, Bessent announced that countries purchasing Russian oil could face additional customs duties of up to 100 percent. He further stated that US President Donald Trump has adopted a different approach on this matter and that they believe European allies should also follow the US lead.
US President Donald Trump announced in a statement last week that if an agreement regarding the Russia-Ukraine war is not reached within 50 days, they will begin implementing "very harsh tariffs." Trump indicated that these tariffs could reach as high as 100 percent.
