US Middle East Envoy: Trump's Gaza plan was misunderstood
US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff argued that US President Donald Trump's plan for the Gaza Strip has been misunderstood, stating that the plan "does not aim to forcibly displace Palestinians."
US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff has commented on the controversial remarks made by US President Donald Trump regarding Gaza.
Speaking at a conference held in Miami, USA, Witkoff argued that Trump's words regarding Gaza were misunderstood. Claiming that Trump's plan "does not aim to displace Palestinians," Witkoff said, "The President is trying to get everyone to think about what is compelling and what is the best solution for the people living there.
This does not mean we have a plan to displace Palestinians," he stated. Claiming that Trump is thinking of Gaza residents, Witkoff said, "For example, do they want to live in a house there, or would they prefer to have the opportunity to settle in a better place, have a job, income, and financial prospects?"
"WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS"
Commenting on the ceasefire and hostage exchange deal in Gaza, Witkoff stated that the negotiations for the second phase of the process would be difficult. Despite this, Witkoff said he was hopeful, adding, "I hope the good faith in the first phase will be carried over to the second phase. Because there are many families there who have children being held hostage," he said. Pointing out that progress has been made in the negotiations, Witkoff said, "We are making good progress in the talks. I hope this leads to good results."
HIS STATEMENTS HAD DRAWN REACTION
US President Donald Trump, who drew backlash by suggesting that Palestinians in Gaza be sent to other countries, had said his country would "take over Gaza." Saying, "We will hold and manage Gaza," Trump had claimed that "stability could be achieved in the Middle East for the first time with the US controlling this piece of land."
Trump had used the expression, "The Palestinians or the people currently living in Gaza will be living beautifully somewhere else."
