US offers $10 million reward for Mexican brothers

The US Department of State has announced that a reward of $5 million each has been placed for brothers Rene Arzate-Garcia and Alfonso Arzate-Garcia, prominent figures in the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the world's most powerful and violent drug-trafficking networks.

In a statement released by the Department of State, it was stated, "A reward of up to $5 million each is offered for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of Rene Arzate-Garcia, known as 'La Rana,' and his brother Alfonso Arzate-Garcia, known as 'Aquiles,' who are said to be the Sinaloa Cartel's managers for the Tijuana region, in any country."

According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), brothers Rene and Alfonso Arzate-Garcia have jointly controlled the Tijuana region—seen as the gateway to California on the US-Mexico border—within the Sinaloa Cartel for the past 15 years.

In its statement on the matter, the Department of State said, "Despite ongoing conflicts, the brothers continue to manage this critical smuggling corridor and are key figures in maintaining cartel operations, including the shipment of the deadly and illegal substance fentanyl, which was designated as a weapon of mass destruction by the Trump administration, into the US. The Trump administration listed the Sinaloa Cartel as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) last year."
