US President Biden: 'We will work for a new constitution'

US President Joe Biden made a statement following the capture of Damascus by jihadists, led by the terrorist organization HTS.

Highlights from Biden's statement are as follows:

"Finally, the Assad regime has fallen. This regime oppressed, tortured, and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians.

We will help build a security capacity to protect our personnel against any threat in eastern Syria, and we will continue to carry out our mission against ISIS, largely maintaining it.

During the transition period, we will support countries including Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Israel against any threat that may come from Syria.

For years, Assad's main supporters have been Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia. However, over the past week, the support of all three has diminished, because all three are in a much weaker position today than they were when I took office.

We will be in contact with all Syrian groups to ensure a transition to an independent and sovereign Syria without the Assad regime, including the process initiated by the United Nations, in order to create a new constitution and a new government that will serve all Syrians."
