US President Trump signals he may increase automobile tariffs

US President Trump made statements regarding automobile tariffs at a signing ceremony held at the White House.

Reminding that he had imposed a 25 percent customs duty on imported automobiles to protect workers in the automotive sector, Trump stated that thanks to this, investments in American production and automobile manufacturing have increased.

Stating that tariffs should be paid for automobiles not produced in the US, Trump said, "This could have been done by any of the presidents. I had done it with China. That's why their cars aren't coming here, but they are going to Europe, everywhere."

However, saying that he likes China and respects President Xi Jinping, Trump explained that they had made a deal with China that is good for both countries.

Trump said, "To further protect automotive workers, I imposed a 25 percent customs duty on all foreign automobiles, and in the not-too-distant future, I may increase this tariff. The higher you go, the more likely it is that they will build a factory here."
