US press: Maduro could be charged with torturing US citizens held in Venezuela

A striking claim has been made regarding the legal proceedings of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was captured in a military operation conducted by the US in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas on January 3 and brought to the US to stand trial on charges of illegal drug trafficking and "narco-terrorism."

Reports in the US press, citing a US official, argue that new charges could be brought against Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores regarding the torture of US citizens held in Venezuela.

The US official stated that an official announcement regarding the new charges could be made as early as tomorrow.

However, there has been no statement yet from the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York regarding the matter.

Maduro and Flores deny the existing charges against them.
