As a result of the vote held in the House of Representatives, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas was impeached by a vote of 214 to 213. Republicans had brought the secretary's impeachment to a vote on the grounds that he failed to ensure border security. For the impeachment decision to be implemented, it must also be approved by the Senate, where Democrats hold the majority.

According to Republican claims, one of the primary figures responsible for the growing migration problem at the US-Mexico border was Mayorkas, whom they accused of failing to enforce immigration law. Mayorkas, whose impeachment was also voted on last week, was removed from his post in the second vote.

This is the second time in US history, and the first time in the last 150 years, that the House of Representatives has impeached a cabinet member.

US President Joe Biden stated regarding the impeachment decision, "History will not look kindly on House Republicans for their act of unconstitutional partisanship that has targeted an honorable public servant in order to play petty political games."

On the other hand, the Senate, where Democrats hold the majority, is not expected to approve the decision.

Republicans are highlighting border security in the election process, claiming that the Biden administration has failed to combat uncontrolled migration.

Last January, the federal government also experienced a dispute with the state of Texas over border security. Republican Governor Greg Abbott, arguing that the government had not taken sufficient measures, deployed the Texas National Guard under his command to the border region.
