US Supreme Court rejects Trump's appeal in E. Jean Carroll case

The US Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal from President Donald Trump seeking to overturn a jury verdict that found him liable for the sexual abuse and defamation of writer E. Jean Carroll.

While no reason was provided for the court's decision, the rejection leaves the $5 million damages award against Trump in place. Trump's lawyers had taken the case to the Supreme Court after failing to achieve a favorable result in the federal appeals court.

Trump reacted to the decision in a statement on his social media account. Describing the old case as a "hoax," Trump stated, "The Supreme Court has surprisingly refused to hear a fake case brought against me by a woman I have never met."

Trump also criticized the legal regulations in New York state, arguing that the case was contrary to the values represented by the United States, and stated that he would continue his legal battle.

E. Jean Carroll had alleged that Trump raped her in the dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York in the spring of 1996, while Trump had denied the allegations.

In the trial held in May 2023, the jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation against Carroll. Under the verdict, he was ordered to pay a total of $5 million in damages, including $2 million for sexual abuse and battery, and $3 million for defamation.
