Vatican: Pope Francis' health has deteriorated

A statement has been released regarding the condition of the 88-year-old spiritual leader of Catholics, Pope Francis. In the statement issued by the Vatican, it was reported that the health of Pope Francis, who is undergoing treatment for a respiratory infection at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy, has deteriorated over the last 24 hours, that he suffered a prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis, and that he required a blood transfusion.

The statement noted, "Although he is more uncomfortable compared to yesterday, he is awake and spent the day in a chair. The course of the illness is currently being monitored."

The statement further indicated that doctors had to administer a "high amount" of oxygen to Pope Francis due to the respiratory crisis, and that a blood transfusion was necessary because tests showed a low platelet count, which was linked to anemia.

The statement also added, "The Pope's condition remains critical. The Pope is not yet out of danger."

Pope Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after experiencing difficulty breathing and was diagnosed with pneumonia.
