The first moments of the flood disaster that claimed 205 lives: Everything happened in minutes
Heavy rainfall that gripped the Southern European country of Spain has caused the deadliest flood disaster since 1973. As the death toll rises to 205, the initial moments of the disaster have emerged.
Spain has been shaken by the deadliest flood and inundation disasters in its recent history.
The Valencia region received the amount of rain it normally gets in a year within eight hours, and at least 205 people lost their lives. Spain has declared three days of mourning. While search efforts continue for dozens of missing people, the death toll is expected to rise.
Work is underway to identify bodies in some areas that have been reduced to ruins as a result of the deadliest flood disaster in Europe in recent years.
50 mobile morgues have been brought to the region.
Defense Minister Margarita Robles said the death toll could rise.
As rivers overflowed due to the floods, bridges, roads, railways, and buildings were swept away, destroying the region's infrastructure.
Transport Minister Oscar Puente said that approximately 80 km of roads in the eastern region were severely damaged or rendered impassable.
Many of the roads were blocked by abandoned cars. The speed at which the disaster occurred was revealed by a video shared on social media.
