Videos regarding Biden's health spark debate in the US
Videos shared on social media in the US in recent days, which are claimed to point to US President Joe Biden's advanced age and poor mental health, are causing controversy between Republicans and Democrats.
While the White House has reacted by stating that the videos regarding Biden are cropped and do not reflect the truth, Republicans claim in their posts that Biden lacks the mental and physical faculties necessary for the presidency.
Democrats argue that the videos are being manipulated through editing, even if artificial intelligence is not used, to make Biden appear different than he is.
In the full version of the video shared by the Republican National Committee, which claimed that Biden "tried to sit on a non-existent chair" at a ceremony he attended on the anniversary of the Normandy landings, it is actually seen that the chair is there and that Biden sits down.
Similarly, in the full version of the video circulating on social media that shows Biden wandering away from the group as if unaware while watching a parachute demonstration with world leaders during his visit to Italy for the G7 Summit, it is understood that Biden moved away from the group of leaders to greet the skydivers who were not visible in the video.
"POSES A DANGER TO VOTERS"
Paul Barrett, Deputy Director of the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights, stated in his assessment to The Hill regarding the videos that although edited videos are less convincing than complex artificial intelligence fakes, they still pose a danger, especially in terms of eroding trust among voters.
Barrett said, "What they are doing is further eroding the distinction between what is true and what is not. I think these types of videos are fuel that feeds the existing, highly polarized partisan attitudes."
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also criticized the videos, which are being spread particularly by the Republican side, at a press briefing the other day, describing them as "malicious" and "cheap fakes."
Jean-Pierre said, "I think this tells you how desperate Republicans are here. Instead of talking about the President's performance in office, we are seeing these manipulated videos."
Biden's rival in the presidential election, Donald Trump, also used the expression, "Crooked Joe and his handlers insist he is sharper than ever and say the videos of Crooked Joe circulating are 'cheap fakes.' Biden can't go anywhere without making a mistake."
