Volkswagen recalls over 271,000 vehicles

German automaker Volkswagen has recalled more than 271,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to the risk that the front passenger airbag may not deploy in a potential accident.

In a statement issued by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it was stated that the recall covers 2021-2024 Atlas and 2020-2024 Atlas Cross Sport model vehicles.

The statement noted that a fault in the wiring of the passenger detection system could occur when someone is sitting in the seat, potentially causing the front passenger airbag to deactivate, which would increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

The statement reported that the potential number of vehicles affected by the recall is 271,330.

It was stated that dealerships will replace the passenger detection system sensors and wiring free of charge, and that owners of the affected vehicles can contact Volkswagen's customer service.

The Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport are among Volkswagen's best-selling vehicles in the U.S.
