Voting extended in Iran's presidential election

Iranians went to the polls today for the 14th presidential election. More than 59,000 polling stations were set up across the country for 61 million 452 thousand 321 eligible voters, who began casting their ballots at 8:00 a.m. local time.

In a statement, Iranian Election Headquarters spokesperson Mohsen Eslami announced that the voting process, which was scheduled to end at 6:00 p.m., has been extended until 8:00 p.m.

In Iran's 14th presidential election, candidates from the conservative camp—former Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and former Interior Minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi—are competing against the sole candidate from the reformist camp, Tabriz MP Masoud Pezeshkian.

Following the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19, the Guardian Council had decided that the 14th presidential election would be held on June 28.
