The US Embassy in Beirut has renewed its travel advisory for Lebanon, calling on its citizens not to travel to the country. The warning stated that there is an increased possibility of armed attacks in the region by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen and that there are attempts by Iran to target US officials in the region.
The embassy statement noted that there have been no changes to the current warning level or risk indicators, but the recommendation for US citizens not to travel to Lebanon due to risks of “crime, terrorism, kidnapping, landmines, and armed conflict” remains in effect.
The statement recalled that the Houthis have previously carried out attacks targeting civilian airports and critical infrastructure facilities in Saudi Arabia. Pointing out that these attacks have led to loss of life and serious disruptions in transportation, it warned that conflicts in the region could spread to a wider area in a short time.
The US administration reported that its capacity to provide assistance to its citizens in emergencies may be limited due to security conditions in Lebanon. It was also noted that the Lebanese government may not be able to guarantee the safety of US citizens during sudden violent incidents and armed conflicts.
The warning stated that missile and drone attacks could occur in different parts of the country, including Beirut, and that this situation could disrupt commercial flights and access to the international airport. Southern Lebanon, areas near the Syrian border, the Dahiyeh district south of Beirut, and refugee camps were listed among the high-risk areas. US citizens located in these areas were urged to leave without delay.
