Warning on Iran's future from Farah Pahlavi, wife of the deposed Shah: 'It must be determined by the will of its people'

Speaking to AFP, 87-year-old Farah Pahlavi said that the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran would be a historical turning point, but that this does not mean the regime in Iran will collapse.

Farah Pahlavi, the wife of the deposed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi who has lived in exile in Paris since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, emphasized that Khamenei's death is "historically significant" for Iran but will not end the regime on its own.

"THE DEATH OF ONE PERSON DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY END A SYSTEM"

Farah Pahlavi stated that the power structure in Iran is not dependent on a single person.

Pahlavi said, "The death of a human being — no matter how central a role they may have played in the architecture of power — does not mean that a system automatically comes to an end."

"THERE SHOULD BE NO GEOPOLITICAL CALCULATIONS"

According to Farah Pahlavi, the main factor that will determine Iran's future will be how the Iranian people establish political unity among themselves.

Pahlavi said that it would be decisive for Iranians to be able to "unite around a peaceful, orderly, and sovereign transition process for a state based on the rule of law."

"IRAN'S FUTURE MUST BE DETERMINED BY THE WILL OF ITS PEOPLE"

Calling on the international community, Pahlavi emphasized that Iran's future should be shaped by the will of the Iranian people, not by the calculations of foreign powers. "The international community must clearly support the fundamental rights of the Iranian people: the right to choose their leaders, the right to speak freely, and the right to live with dignity," she said.

Pahlavi also stated that international support "should be given directly to the people, not based on geopolitical calculations."

Farah Pahlavi's son, Reza Pahlavi, has emerged in recent years as an alternative political figure to the leadership in Iran. The 65-year-old Pahlavi, who lives in the US, had celebrated the attacks by the US and Israel on Iran and argued that Trump killing Khamenei would pave the way for Iran to 'become a free country.'
