White House message to Turkey: 'We understand security concerns', 'It was attacked'

Emphasizing that they are closely monitoring developments in Syria in the context of both the transition process and the fight against ISIS, Kirby reiterated their approach regarding both Turkey's security concerns and the terrorist organization PKK/YPG.

Responding to a question, Kirby commented, "We understand Turkey's legitimate security concerns along the (Syrian) border.

Turkish citizens and Turkish cities there have been attacked by terrorists crossing that border. The Turks have every right to defend themselves against terrorist attacks; we understand that, and we are in active discussions with the Turks on this matter."

"THE PURPOSE OF OUR MILITARY PRESENCE IS THE FIGHT AGAINST ISIS"

Kirby added, however, that the anti-ISIS mission should not be disrupted and that they do not want the attention of the SDF (terrorist organization PKK/YPG) in Syria to shift to "things other than the anti-ISIS fight."

Evaluating the presence of US troops in Syria, Kirby commented, "We have a small military presence in Syria, and our troops are there for really one purpose, and that is to continue the fight against ISIS."

Stating that ISIS must not be allowed to resurge during the transition process in Syria, Kirby expressed that their partnership with the SDF (terrorist organization PKK/YPG) in Syria is within this scope and said they want this cooperation to continue.
