White House says 'they agreed': Swift denial from Spain
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt's statement regarding Spain, claiming they "agreed to cooperate with the U.S. military," has been denied by Spanish Foreign Minister Albares.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, in a statement regarding Spain, said, "I think they heard Trump's message loud and clear yesterday. They agreed to cooperate with the U.S. military."
Following Leavitt's statement, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares denied the remarks in "no uncertain terms."
Speaking to the Spanish press, Albares stated, "The Spanish government's position on the war in the Middle East, the bombings in Iran, and the use of our bases has not changed."
Albares said he had "no idea" what Leavitt was referring to, adding, "There is an agreement, a bilateral understanding, and outside the framework of this bilateral agreement, there will be no use of Spain's sovereign bases. Spain is a sovereign country that makes its own foreign policy decisions."
Albares noted that he was not concerned by Trump's threat, stating, "Any pressure on Spain is pressure on all Europeans, and we have their solidarity."
U.S. President Trump had threatened Spain with an "embargo," claiming that Spain had closed its bases to use in attacks against Iran. Trump had said, "Spain is in terrible shape right now. I told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cut off all trade relations with Spain."
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez responded by saying, "The Iran War has turned the world into a more insecure place. We are against this catastrophe. We are against war. The war in Iran will not provide a more just international order. We will work together with countries in the region for peace and diplomacy. This is how the catastrophe of humanity begins. You do not play Russian roulette with the fate of millions of people."
