Who is Asma al-Assad, how old is she? What is her health status?
Nearly five years after announcing that she had fully recovered from breast cancer, it has been reported that Asma al-Assad, the wife of Bashar al-Assad, has been diagnosed with leukemia. So, who is Asma al-Assad, how old is she? What is her health status? Here are the details...
In a statement issued by the Syrian Presidency, it was announced that Syria's First Lady Asma al-Assad has been diagnosed with leukemia, nearly five years after she announced that she had fully recovered from breast cancer.
WHO IS ASMA AL-ASSAD?
She was born on August 11, 1975, as the daughter of Fawaz Akhras, a cardiologist at Cromwell Hospital in London, and Sahar Akhras, a retired diplomat. Her family is originally from the city of Homs and is Sunni.
Asma al-Assad graduated from King's College in 1996. After university, she began working at the Deutsche Bank Group in the hedge fund management division, dealing with European and East Asian clients. In 1998, she began working in the investment banking division at JP Morgan, specializing in mergers and acquisitions.
Asma al-Assad has been described by analysts and the media as an important part of the Syrian government's public relations. She was loved by the public for taking progressive positions on women's rights and education. The stylishly designed clothes she wore also attracted media attention. She remained largely silent during the Syrian uprising. For this reason, the Syrian uprising dealt a blow to her image.
On March 23, 2012, European Union foreign ministers decided to impose a series of sanctions on the British-born Asma al-Assad, including a travel ban to EU member countries and the freezing of her assets in those countries. The UK Home Office stated that the EU travel ban would not prevent Asma al-Assad from entering the UK, but that she was not expected to come to the UK under these circumstances anyway.
WHAT IS ASMA AL-ASSAD'S HEALTH STATUS?
In the statement made by the Syrian Presidency, it was stated that 48-year-old Asma will be subjected to a special treatment protocol that requires isolation and that she will therefore stay away from public events.
In August 2019, Asma had announced that she had fully recovered from breast cancer, which she said had been diagnosed early.
