WHO warning on ChatGPT

In a written statement issued by the WHO, it was pointed out that the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare, such as in disease diagnosis, is becoming widespread.

The statement emphasized that caution should be exercised in the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Google Bard, as they carry risks alongside their potential to assist in diagnosing diseases in environments with inadequate conditions.

"RAPID ADOPTION OF UNTESTED SYSTEMS CAN LEAD TO ERRORS"

The statement emphasized that the WHO is "enthusiastic" about the use of LLMs to contribute to health efforts, but noted that the rapid adoption of untested systems could lead to errors and cause harm to patients.

The statement also conveyed concerns that LLMs are not being applied consistently and that this practice could erode trust in artificial intelligence.

"CAN BE MISUSED"

Pointing out that diligence is required to ensure these technologies are used in safe, effective, and ethical ways, the statement warned that the data used to train artificial intelligence could generate misleading or incorrect information.

The statement emphasized that LLMs could be misused to generate and spread highly convincing disinformation in the form of text, audio, or video content that is difficult for the public to distinguish from reliable health information.
