Elected President last July, Masoud Pezeshkian expressed in his first interview that the 'morality police' should no longer harass women.

The United Nations (UN) had previously announced that women who violate dress codes were still being punished by the morality police.

The female journalist interviewing Pezeshkian reminded him of the UN's statement and shared that she herself had been subjected to pressure on the street. In response, Pezeshkian said, 'The morality police should not interfere (with women). I will follow up on the situation to ensure they do not harass women.'

The interview was published by Iranian media on the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death.

One of Pezeshkian's campaign promises was to remove the street patrols of the morality police, which exert pressure on women.

In the published interview, some of the female journalists asking the Iranian President questions were seen wearing their headscarves loosely. The international press interpreted this image as 'a sign that strict dress codes for women might be relaxed.'

Pezeshkian was supported by women who wanted the morality police to be withdrawn from the streets.
