World population has surpassed 8 billion! Where does Turkey rank?
Following a proposal submitted to the UN General Assembly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989, July 11 is celebrated annually as "World Population Day" to draw attention to population-related issues worldwide.
Although the rate of population growth is slowing down globally, the world population has surpassed 8 billion as of 2023.
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)'s "2023 State of World Population Report," the global population continues to grow. This report highlights global population trends and key demographic data.
According to the report, the three most populous countries in the world are ranked as follows:
India: 1 billion 428 million 600 thousand people
China: 1 billion 425 million 700 thousand people
USA: 340 million people
The 8 prominent countries where global population growth is concentrated are:
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Egypt
Ethiopia
India
Nigeria
Pakistan
Philippines
Tanzania
These countries are expected to account for half of the projected increase in the global population by 2050.
Turkey's population, at 85 million 279 thousand 553 people, ranks 18th in the world. Our country's population accounts for 1.1 percent of the total world population.
It is emphasized that despite the decline in the global population growth rate, the population continues to increase. According to the UN report, the decline in fertility rates and the decrease in mortality rates are causing the population growth rate to persist.
It is noted that the population is trending downward in some regions of the world. For example, China has recorded one of the lowest birth rates in its modern history. Furthermore, the population in Japan is expected to fall below 100 million by 2056.
It is particularly emphasized that migration is a significant factor in the distribution of the population. Some countries, such as Turkey, have experienced changes in their populations due to migration from Syria.
