Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached: Date for South Korea's presidential election set
Following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol in South Korea, the election date has been determined. The cabinet, meeting under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, has set June 3 for the public to choose their new leader.
In South Korea, it has been announced that the elections to determine the new leader following the removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol from office will be held on June 3.
According to the Yonhap news agency, the election date was finalized during a cabinet meeting held under the leadership of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who is temporarily assuming presidential duties.
According to the election process, candidates will submit their applications by May 11, and election campaigns will officially begin as of May 12.
The new president is expected to take office following the vote on June 3.
Under the constitution, presidential elections are required to be held within 60 days at the latest following an impeachment decision.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Then-President Yoon Suk Yeol had declared martial law on December 3, 2024, on the grounds that "the opposition was involved in anti-state activities." However, this decision had to be withdrawn following a vote in parliament and the approval of the Council of Ministers.
Yoon, whose impeachment was requested in a vote held by the National Assembly on December 14, 2024, was temporarily suspended from his duties until the final decision to be made by the Constitutional Court.
Following the completion of the trial, the Constitutional Court decided on April 4 to "accept the National Assembly's impeachment request and remove Yoon from office due to his declaration of martial law."
