Zelenskyy calls on Putin for talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sent an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding talks to end the war that began between the parties in February 2022. Zelenskyy stated, "Ukraine proposes that the war be ended solely between us and you, in a bilateral format. I am proposing a meeting."

Stating that the meeting could take place in certain mediating countries, primarily Turkey, Zelenskyy said, "Switzerland, Turkey, or Arab countries could host such a meeting and are willing to do so."

Pointing out that leaders are the decisive figures alongside the negotiations held between countries, Zelenskyy wrote, "I propose setting a clear date for the meeting."

Conveying that they are ready for a comprehensive ceasefire during the negotiation process, Zelenskyy said, "Ukraine is ready to declare a full ceasefire during the negotiations. This could be an implementation similar to the ceasefire that took place within the Iran framework."

While noting that the US could observe the front line and act as a guarantor of the process during a potential ceasefire, Zelenskyy also touched upon the issue of prisoner exchanges. Zelenskyy wrote, "We are ready for a prisoner exchange on an 'all-for-all' basis. This could be a welcome start to ending the war. Furthermore, serious steps must be taken for the return of civilians and children abducted in the war. We need to determine the future of the Ukrainian and Russian people. If you do not personally conclude that it is time to end this war, Ukraine will continue to fight to maintain its existence. There will be those who support us."

In the letter, Zelenskyy argued that the ongoing conflicts negatively affect Russia's resources and international standing, stating, "Ukraine is maintaining its independence and, despite predictions to the contrary, will continue to maintain it. Do not be afraid to exit the war; this is the most important thing expected of you right now. We Ukrainians do not want a permanent war. We know very well that a life without war is incomparably better."

Kremlin: "We have seen the letter, it will be delivered to Putin"

The Kremlin Palace announced that Zelenskyy's letter has been taken under consideration. Kremlin Palace Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, "We have seen the letter. However, President Putin has not been able to review it as he is busy with his schedule. The letter will be delivered to him after the president's schedule."
