First statement from Beşiktaş Municipality regarding the fire tragedy that claimed 29 lives: 'No information was provided'

In Beşiktaş, Gayrettepe, 29 people lost their lives in a fire that broke out at a nightclub undergoing renovations.

A statement regarding the incident was issued by Beşiktaş Municipality.

Regarding the fire, the statement noted that an administrative investigation is being conducted by Civil Inspectors appointed under the instructions of the Ministry of Interior, adding: "Furthermore, a judicial investigation has been initiated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, and 3 public prosecutors have been assigned to the matter. In this context, judicial and administrative investigations into the subject are ongoing.

It is understood that the business in question first received its license in 1987, and the license was renewed in 2018 due to a transfer of ownership.

However, no application was made to our municipality regarding the alleged renovation process, no permit was obtained, and no information was provided. Currently, investigations by the fire department, the prosecutor's office, and inspectors are ongoing, and further information will be provided upon their conclusion.

As an institution, we will follow the incident closely and continue to keep the public informed. We will continue to exert all our efforts, together with all responsible public institutions, to ensure social peace and security," the statement said.
