Rojin Kabaiş’s father outraged: ‘How can an autopsy report be just one sentence? They have added to our pain’

Rojin Kabaiş, a first-year student in the Child Development Department at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYÜ) Faculty of Education, went out after having dinner at her dormitory on September 27 and was never heard from again. 

On the 18th day of the search efforts, Rojin’s lifeless body was found exactly 24 kilometers away from the point where she went missing. An autopsy was performed by the Council of Forensic Medicine for approximately 7 hours, and 80 samples were taken from her body for examination. The autopsy results, announced recently, reported that the cause of Rojin’s death was ‘drowning.’ 

When Rojin was found, there were bruises on her body. Her family had repeatedly described how excited and happy she was to have enrolled in the university. With the release of the autopsy results, all questions remain unanswered, and Rojin’s death remains suspicious. 

Her father, Nizamettin Kabaiş, spoke to 12punto about the autopsy results. “They wrote only one sentence in the report. Why was my daughter found 24 kilometers away? How did the bruises form? There are no answers to any of these. We want justice,” he said. 

‘THEY HAVE ADDED TO OUR PAIN’ 

Father Nizamettin Kabaiş said the following regarding the autopsy results: 

“They wrote only one sentence. They said ‘drowning,’ but there is no other explanation. 80 samples had been taken. There is not a single other sentence. They just reported it in the autopsy. With this result, they have added even greater pain to our suffering.” 

Stating that he saw Rojin’s face and the upper part of her body before the autopsy examination, father Nizamettin Kabaiş described what he saw as follows: 

“I looked when they brought her for the autopsy; I only saw her face. Other than her face, there was no swelling on her body. Wouldn’t she have been bloated if she had stayed in the water for that many days? If she wasn’t in the water the entire time since the day she went missing, where was she on the remaining days? There were bruises on her back and face. It is obvious that there were bruises. They had turned pitch black. Let them explain these. Whoever harmed this child must be brought to light.”

‘THE DOCTOR WHO CAME OUT OF THE AUTOPSY TOLD ME...’ 

Nizamettin Kabaiş stated that one of the doctors who performed the autopsy told him at the end of the procedure, “This child has not been in the water for long.” According to Kabaiş, the doctor told him the following: 

“One of the doctors who came out of the autopsy came up to me. ‘My condolences. This child has not been in the water for long. She has been in it for at most 4-6 days,’ he said. Upon this, I asked, ‘Where was she for the remaining 12-13 days then?’ He told me, ‘If she had stayed in the water for 18 days, the body would have decomposed.’ I saw it myself anyway. There was no swelling on her face or the upper part of her body.”

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS REMAIN AFTER ROJIN

How did the bruises on Rojin’s body form? Why and how was she found 24 kilometers away? How many days was her body in the water? As long as all these questions remain unanswered, Rojin Kabaiş’s death will remain one of the many suspicious deaths of women in Turkey. 

Father Nizamettin Kabaiş stated that there is an attempt to frame the incident as a suicide, and expressed the following: 

“If they say suicide, I will object. If a person takes their own life, how do they get there? Helicopters searched here, boats searched here. Why was she found 24 kilometers away? It is not just me, everyone is asking this. There is no explanation despite the presence of bruises. Everything is clear. She is not someone who would commit suicide. If this child committed suicide, why wasn’t she found in the same place? We only want the answers to these questions. We want justice.”
