James Webb captures image of 'cat's tail' in space
A "cat's tail" in the Beta Pictoris system has been discovered and imaged by the James Webb Space Telescope.

The James Webb Space Telescope has now captured images of a dusty "cat's tail" in the young planetary system known as Beta Pictoris. Located just 63 light-years from Earth, this system has been the target of observations for decades as a site of interest for scientists. And there are good reasons why the system attracts so much attention.
COMPLEX CIRCUMSTELLAR ENVIRONMENT
As reported by Chip, the cat's tail-like formation detected by Webb is just one of several new features that have captured the interest of astronomers. A new composition created by the research team showcases the cat's tail around the primary and secondary debris disks previously discovered here with an incredible level of detail.
In general, astronomers say the results of the Beta Pictoris observations collected by Webb's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) have exceeded their expectations. As lead author of the new research Isabel Rebollido explained, "Beta Pictoris is a debris disk that has it all. It has a really bright, nearby star that we can study very well, and a complex circumstellar environment consisting of a multi-component disk, exocomets, and two imaged exoplanets."
Furthermore, Rebollido says the team did not expect Webb to find two different types of material regarding the system. However, MIRI clearly shows, in a way that interests scientists, that the material in the cat's tail and the secondary debris disk is warmer than that in the main disk.
In the paper presented at the 243rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society, astronomers emphasized that this tail and its origin are important points that should also be examined for future research. The latest meeting took place in New Orleans, Louisiana, and highlighted many of the successes scientists have achieved in space exploration and research over the past year.
The discovery of this cat's tail in Beta Pictoris once again demonstrates why revisiting previously studied locations is so crucial to unlocking all the mysteries of the universe.
