Radio waves newly detected by researchers take 8 billion years to arrive

Australian astronomers have detected a mysterious burst originating from radio waves that took 8 billion years to reach Earth.

According to the research published in the journal Science, one of the radio waves known as Fast Radio Bursts (FRB) has reached Earth after an 8-billion-year journey.

Researchers reported that the duration of the wave, named FRB 20220610A, lasted less than a millisecond.

According to a report by CNN, researcher Stuart Ryder noted that after pinpointing the origin of the wave using the radio telescope called the "Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP)," he searched for the galaxy from which the wave originated using the European Southern Observatory's telescope in Chile.

Ryder stated that as a result of the studies, it was discovered that this wave came from much further away than other FRBs and was formed as a result of an explosion caused by several merging galaxies.

Another researcher, Ryan Shannon, also expressed that FRBs could be used to calculate the mass of the universe. Shannon noted that FRBs can detect ionized material between galaxies.

Following the discovery of the first FRB in 2007, the origin points of 50 FRBs have been identified to date.
