Costumes and accessories used in The Crown series are being sold at auction

Costumes and accessories used in The Crown series are being sold at auction

In the UK, the costumes, accessories, and cars used over 6 seasons of The Crown, which chronicles the events throughout the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, hold significance not only as stage costumes or props but also in terms of political history, period fashion, and popular culture.

The producers of The Crown, who recreated costumes and items used in numerous events that defined the last 70 years of England to resemble the originals, have put 161 of these items up for sale through the famous auction house Bonhams following the conclusion of the series.

Queen Elizabeth, who holds the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the country, was only 27 years old when she ascended the throne in 1953.

At her coronation, she wore a dress called a "shroud tunic," which was specially produced for her and symbolized that she had set aside worldly titles before God.

After being anointed with holy oil, a cape was placed on her. Queen Elizabeth, who was the first monarch to have her coronation broadcast live, was watched by millions while wearing the imperial robe over this cape and shroud tunic.

The 728-year-old chair the Queen sat on, the shroud tunic, the imperial robe, and the cape were recreated exactly for The Crown series and are among the items put up for sale at Bonhams, along with a replica of the Gold State Coach used since 1762.

THATCHER'S SUITS, CHURCHILL'S HAT

For the series, in which the Queen was portrayed by 3 different actresses across 3 different eras, not only were the costumes recreated, but essentially 70 years of British history were brought back to life.

Royal portraits featuring actor Jared Harris, who played Elizabeth's father King George VI, stamps featuring Claire Foy and Olivia Colman who played the Queen, and exact replicas of the engagement rings worn by Josh O'Connor and Emma Corrin, who played Prince Charles and Princess Diana, are also among the items to be sold at auction.

In addition to the Queen's bedroom, her husband Prince Philip's study, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's handbags, and Winston Churchill's portrait sketches, the Buckingham Palace gate and the iconic door of 10 Downing Street are also awaiting buyers.

Among the costumes worn by actors and actresses throughout the 6-season, 60-episode series that were featured in real-life events are the Queen's dresses, iconic hats worn by actresses playing her mother Queen Elizabeth, the "conservative blue" suit worn by the actress playing Conservative Prime Minister Thatcher, and the wedding dress worn by the actress playing the current Queen, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

PRINCESS DIANA'S REVENGE DRESS

Beyond the replicas of the symbolic ceremonial costumes worn by the Queen as a monarch, the most attention-grabbing items in the auction are the outfits worn by the actresses playing Princess Diana and Jackie Kennedy, the wife of US President John F. Kennedy.

Princess Diana was separated from her husband Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, but was still carrying out her official duties as the mother of the future king in their not-yet-officially-ended marriage. Prince Charles had announced his relationship with his former lover Parker-Bowles on June 29, 1994, and the press was expected to talk about this on June 30.

However, at an event held on the evening of June 29, Princess Diana wore an outfit that did not conform to royal family rules at all, and it dominated the newspapers on June 30. This outfit of Diana's became known as the "revenge dress."

The revenge dress used in The Crown is also one of the most interesting pieces in the auction and has an opening price of 8,000 pounds (approximately 308,000 lira).

Although Kennedy had no connection to the royal family, there are a few scenes in The Crown featuring him. One of these scenes depicts the moments when President Kennedy was assassinated. The pink suit worn by the actress playing Jackie Kennedy at the moment of the assassination was put up for sale starting at 1,000 pounds (approximately 38,000 lira).

The opening price for the shroud tunic, robe, and cape was set at 20,000 pounds (approximately 770,000 lira), the gold carriage at 30,000 pounds (approximately 1.1 million lira), the coronation chair at 10,000 pounds (approximately 380,000 lira), and Winston Churchill's glasses and hat at 400 pounds (approximately 15,000 lira).

The functional gold carriage can be driven out of Bonhams with 6 horses.

'MADE WITH INSPIRATION FROM THE REAL THING'

Meg Randell, Bonhams UK and Europe Fashion Director, explained to an AA reporter the messages that the dresses and items used in the series convey regarding period fashion and political history.

Stating that they have been working on the auction for about a year, Randell noted that every detail was handmade and custom-produced, and that what is being sold is only 1 percent of the products used.

Pointing out that all the products are pieces that remind us of a moment in history, Randell said:

"The revenge dress worn by Elizabeth Debicki in the role of Princess Diana is a key item because it is an iconic dress that people recognize when they see it. It was made with inspiration from the real dress Diana wore. The moment you see it, it takes you back to the moment in the 1990s when Diana wore it, and all the press attention turned to her instead of Charles and Camilla.

It is a wonderful dress, not just as a dress, but as a moment in fashion history, royal history, and the history of pop culture. It is very exciting and is receiving a lot of interest."

BIDS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL FEBRUARY 7

The items exhibited at the auction house in London can be visited for free until February 5. The auction for the sales will take place on February 5, and online bids will be accepted until February 7.

The proceeds from the auction will be given as scholarships to students at the National Film and Television School.
