French director Leos Carax speaks at Qumra Film Days: 'Music rejected me'
French screenwriter and director Leos Carax participated in a masterclass at the '2024 Qumra Film Days' organized by the Doha Film Institute. Carax said, "I think the most beautiful life is a life spent with music. Because I wasn't very talented as a child, music rejected me."
New York Film Festival former director Richard Pena moderated the event, which was held at the Museum of Islamic Art Auditorium in Doha and attended by numerous amateur filmmakers and directors.
In his speech, where he argued that cinema is frequently being rediscovered, Carax said, "Cinema is the only art form that requires a machine. We transitioned from silent films to talkies, from black and white to color. Every innovation in cinema reinvents the film."
'I LEARNED TO EDIT FILMS'
Carax, who won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival for his musical film 'Annette', pointed out the significant role music plays in his directing career and stated the following:
"I think the most beautiful life is a life spent with music. Because I wasn't very talented as a child, music rejected me. However, I always had a desire to be a part of music. Later, I learned to edit films. It is not easy at all to arrange the things you shoot over and over again.
However, over time, the magic of editing slowly grows on you, and before long, you stop caring about the difficulty. When making a film, you bring visuals together and discover something new."
Carax described cinema as 'a toy to be played with,' adding that a quality film can emerge from a shared dream.
The event also featured a screening of director Ramata-Toulaye Sy's film "Banel and Adama".
WHO IS LEOS CARAX?
Carax, who began his career as a film critic and is known for his unique visual narrative style, made his first feature film in 1984.
Operating with an approach that challenges traditional boundaries, Carax was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival with his second film, "Mauvais Sang".
Carax also directed the films "The Lovers on the Bridge", "Pola X", and "Holy Motors".
